It's Friday of SXSW and things have been going rather well. Parking's a mess, taking the bus seems to be a mess, and downtown is packed. Seems like the best thing to do is take a cab or ride your bike.
Friday for me means wandering down South Congress and going to the Yard Dog, Continental Club, Jo's Coffee, checking out Jovitas, and even going to Maria's Taco X-press for some good food and Americana showcase.
My friend Lance (Whitey Conwell) will be at Maria's playing Sax an Australian band, Ann McCue,
on Friday. Lance describes the band as "Roadhouse Rock." It's a short gig (
1-1:20 pm).
The best show of the day may be at the Gingerman (and Saturday too). Check the lineup and go here to RSVP and to get a ticket: http://industryofmusic.eventbrite.com/

Speaking of what's going on in the official SXSW world, I have the following marked on my calendar. The best value for those who like free is the Auditorium Shores with Cheap Trick, etc.
For those who like fine garage and upbeat dirty rock and roll could do well spending the night at BD Riley's. It has the added bonus of good pint of Guiness and great TV's for checking the NCAA basketball tournament.
The Deadstring Brothers are another of favorites playing a great showcase at the Continental Club.
You can't go wrong at the Austin Music Hall starting with Black Joe Lewis, Raphael Saadiq, Smokey Robinson, and Sharon Jones.
· THE BODEANS Mr. Sad Clown Twenty three years after their T-Bone Burnett produced debut Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams led them to win a Rolling Stone reader’s poll as “Best New American Band,” The BoDeans are still rocking and harmonizing gracefully, touring the U.S. regularly and exposing the kids...
· Anatomy texts might not show it, but the greatest soul and blues music leaves no doubt that the hip bone is directly connected to the heart –– a fact that’s driven home in every note laid down by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. As they prove on their Lost Highway...
· The Spring Standards are an energetic force of three-part harmony circling over a rock n' roll sound with an old country aftertaste. From small towns to big cities, they explode on stage with spirit, spontaneity, and a style all their own. They are, in no particular order: James Cleare, James Smith...
·“I get weird songs in my head and putting pen to paper is kind of like a diuretic,” Anya Marina says about why she writes songs. “If I didn’t get them out, they would probably make my mind feel very bloated. And no girl likes to be bloated.” Perhaps that’s why...

· The Ugly Beats formed in January 2003. Before striking their first note the band promptly wound the clock all the way back to 1966 and has left it there ever since. Armed with Paul Revere, Ventures and Easybeats records, the four guys and one gal quickly whipped up a list of...
· Lissie Maurus is from here, this rounded part of the Land of Lincoln that most people still believe to be another part of Chicago because their mental map of Illinois ends at the suburbs, as that Aurora outlet mall fades into the eastern distance. Rock Island, Ill., probably gave her those...
· Pirate Love formed in 2003 in Oslo, Norway and quickly became one of the country’s most exciting live bands. · The dictionary defines the popular term “comfort food” as “food prepared in a traditional style having a usually nostalgic or sentimental appeal.” It has been known to have a buffering effect as it soothes the soul and spurs memories of more “comforting” times. If that concept holds up in the kitchen,...
· From the classic rock echoes that hang heavy like the reefer smoke in the rafters of Detroit’s Cobo Hall, to the soul reflected in the alleys and small faces of London’s Heavy Load scene to the exile off Main Street, few bands channel the sonic groove generated at the headwaters of...
· DEER TICK: THE UNLIKELY SAVIOURS OF LIVE MUSIC by Finbarr Bermingham Remember the good ol' days? You remember, back when Pluto was still a planet? People used to laugh, regularly. · Picture it: the rustic grind of rural America. The cacophonous crunch and wheeze of motor-driven rock songs accompany the sound of corroded farm implements awakened to service once again. Who have I liked so far? Ray Davies was amazing playing acoustic then inviting the 88's up for 6 rousing, rocking Kinks songs. I forgot how many great songs the Kinks did. John Hiatt was great too, and the 88's were a ton of fun. The whole thing was only tainted by the Longhorn basketball team laying a steamer on the TV in the corner.
The Dandies were great on Wednesday as well as the Cocktail Slippers and Ozamatli.
Too much fun and I'm only half way done.
